‘It’s certainly pretty,’ admitted Naomi, slightly grudgingly.

A flood of late-morning sunshine was pouring in the window. Monsieur Carodoc’s land was on a small rise, so looking down from the bedroom Naomi and Ruth could see right over the tops of the pink and silver apple trees to rich green fields beyond. The whole landscape was crisscrossed with blossoming hedges. The air was full of the noise of birds, jubilant skylark music descending from the blue, finch and linnet song from the trees, and chickens on the ground. A mile or so away, looking like a line drawn with silver pencil between the fields and the sky, sparkled the sea.

‘Pity it’s French,’ remarked Naomi.

‘The birds don’t sound French,’ said Ruth. ‘They sound like English birds, even the chickens.’

‘I wonder what Joseck would say if he could see this?’

Joseck was their friend in Africa; a reference point in their lives. Recently, he had written that the rains in his district had been very small. It had not been a complaint, even though his family’s fields depended upon the rain for survival; it had just been written as part of the news.

‘Joseck would think it was Heaven,’ said Ruth, and she stopped complaining about the Frenchness of France, and went downstairs.
